Architecture Project

  1. Habitat 67, located in Montreal, Quebec, is both a housing complex and a landmark. It's design was engineered by Canadian architect Moshe Safdie, and construction was finished in 1967. He wanted to revolutionize the way homes were built. The complex was designed to integrate variety and diversity of scattered private homes with the economics and density of a modern apartment building. Modular concrete forms interlock to define the space of the complex. It was designed to create cheaper housing for more people with close yet private quarters, each equipped with a garden. It was believed to illustrate the new lifestyle that people would live in an increasingly crowded civilization. Habitat 67 cost $22,195,920, or about $140,000 per living unit.
